Eqbal Ahmad arrives in Paris. He travels through Europe for five weeks to assess the feasibility of establishing an international institute in Europe. He visits France, Britain, the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark and Sweden and talks to more than 200 people about the idea.

 
   

Fall

 

Helen Hopps, appointed as administrative fellow of TNI, moves to The Netherlands and puts a lot of effort in cleaning and basic refurnishing of the TNI building at Paulus Potterstraat 20 in Amsterdam. The St. Ignacius Seminary in Amsterdam donates a lot of furniture to the Institute.

 
   

9 November

   

Eqbal Ahmad arrives in Amsterdam and moves in the building. The building belongs to the Janss Foundation in California and TNI can use it rent-free on the condition that TNI maintains it.

 
   

24 November

 

TNI appears in the press for the first time. Eqbal Ahmad and Helen Hopps are interviewed for an article in the Dutch daily newspaper NRC Handelsblad: 'American intellectuals choose Amsterdam'.

10 December

 

Henry Kissinger receives the Nobel Peace Prize. Eqbal Ahmad wants to organise a conference around the visit of Kissinger to Oslo. This is postponed since Kissinger cancelled this trip.
