Sara is project manager at TNI's Knowledge Hub, covering economic and financial topics.

She also works at the Sustainable Finance Lab on themes like fiscal policy, climate finance and degrowth. Previously, she was the coordinator of Handel Anders!, working on trade and investment treaties. She has worked in academia, at media, think tanks, ngo’s and for the Dutch Socialist Party in the national and European Parliament.

COP28 should tackle global debt issues

Climate Crisis
Global debt has reached unprecedented heights. Despite years of international initiatives to tackle debt, a comprehensive approach to deal with outstanding debt and prevent debt crises is still lacking. Instead of applying a case-by-case approach, the international community at COP28 should work towards a common international legal framework for debt restructuring, including a mechanism for fair debt treatment and a debt authority. Resolving debt issues as such will strengthen the case for climate finance and finance for development.

El acuerdo comercial entre la Unión Europea y el Mercosur provoca la destrucción de la naturaleza, la violación de los derechos territoriales de los Pueblos Indígenas y la pérdida de empleos en la industria en los países del Mercosur. Por consiguiente, se debería proponer un tratado alternativo para mejorar la cooperación entre los países de la UE y del Mercosur, mientras se promueven normas de comercio internacional justas y sostenibles.

The EU-Mercosur free trade agreement A critical analysis and an alternative

Free Trade Agreements
The EU-Mercosur trade agreement leads to the destruction of nature, violations of the land rights of farmers and Indigenous people and loss of industrial jobs in the Mercosur countries. An alternative treaty should be proposed – one that improves political cooperation between the EU and Mercosur countries while strengthening fair and sustainable international trade rules.
